Regain Your Confidence

A multiyear study at the University of Calgary showed that people who chronically put things off do so because they lack confidence. They don’t believe they can accomplish a task, or accomplish it well, researchers noted, and so they don’t start, or they dramatically delay starting.

This one of the most important steps a jobseeker will take to get their life and career on track.

Over the next few posts, I will arm you with valuable strategies that you can implement to regain your confidence fast so you can achieve your goals.

Spice It Up With a New Job Search Workout!

Do you need to spice up your job search? Are you doing the same everyday? If so, it gets dull, boring and unproductive. So why not try something new each day.

Post your goals where you can see them. Get inspired!

You must start small by tackling little goals that inspire you to take larger ones. Revel in small successes and think like a winner. You need to psych yourself up for your career workout. Savor the self-esteem boost – when you feel mentally and physically strong you feel strong in every aspect of your life.

Remind yourself of this bottom-line everyday; Job search is not about getting on job boards. It’s about adding meaning to your career.  You will get out of this job search  experience what you choose to put into it.  Now, go get busy doing something meaningful and NEW!!!

Loss of focus and discouragement

While in your job search, the key to NOT getting discouraged is to keep yourself busy while looking for your next position. Too many job seekers, I know are stuck in cement and can’t move forward.

Get a plan. If you don’t have goals and an action plan to go with it, your job search will come to a screeching halt. Take control of your career future and begin taking very small steps towards your goals so you can land your desired job, faster.

Here’s how to get started:

  • Identify your strengths. There are several personality assessments that can help you quickly cut through the clutter and get you moving.
  • For list makers, write down your top skills, interests, and talents. What makes you unique? What differentiates you from your competitors?
  • Examine your likes and dislikes in your previous position. Now what skills do you want to use in your new position?
  • What motivates you?
  • Take the time to reflect on these questions and write it all down. Be committed to doing the work. No one can help you take this step but you!
  • Take time to keep your focus. By uncovering who you are, you can be more efficient and effective in your job search.

When you begin to get your mind-set in the right direction, you will begin feeling “unstuck” and ready to take on the first small step of navigating through the unchartered job search territory and turning this information into the ammunition you need for a successful job search!

Getting a Good Start for 2011

In the new year, where do you want be in your career? What action will you take to reach your goals? Do you want to be in the driver’s seat, steering your own change, or do you want things to get to a crisis situation before you take action?

Remove the Guess Work

Let’s identify career topics and look at some valuable tools you can put to use in moving your career to the next level. You can update your career blueprint and start moving to new heights today!

Take Action

Here are three ways career professionals can get their job search campaign up and running faster:

1. Get out of your own way. Take off the blinders and see your own potential. Too many professionals are limited by their own beliefs and therefore miss out on growing and developing themselves, hence missing valuable opportunities.

2. Loss of focus and discouragement. You need to stop and ask yourself, what is it that you want in your career? The more you can peel back the layers of what you like and dislike in a position the clearer you are in your future direction. The clarity that unfolds will provide the strength and perseverance you need to propel you forward. As job seekers get specific about their career desires, potential employers appreciate career professionals that show them that they are crystal clear about the position they are seeking.

3.  Establish specific goals that will move you forward. Job seekers need a blueprint to follow so they can execute that plan and evaluate progress while making adjustments as needed to achieve desired outcomes.

The secret of getting ahead is to get moving NOW.

Are you feeling stuck? Or having a bad day?

It all started early one morning while I was watching The Today Show. Gretchen Rubin was promoting her most recent New York Times best seller book, The Happiness Project.

Gretchen had an epiphany one rainy afternoon in the unlikeliest of places:  a city bus. “The days are long but the years are short,” she realized. “Time is passing, and I am not focusing enough on the things that really matter.”  In that moment,  she decided to dedicate a year to her happiness project.   Source:   The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin

Does that sound familiar? Do you want to improve your life today?   If so, read on.

The book is full of resolutions and test driving the wisdom of the ages, current scientific research, and lessons from popular culture about how to be happier.  Being happy is a choice. The choice is yours, and you need to be able to let the happiness flow through you. As I go through my life, it is important for me to have joy now. Why would I put it off? So, I have been paying close attention to the smaller moments in my life. In my life’s journey, I don’t want to put off being happy. Life is too short, I want to be happy now!!  Too many times, you wait to celebrate some huge goal just to find out that reaching the goal didn’t really make you as happy as you thought it would.  It was the smaller victories/moments along the way that made you smile and be happy.

Stay tuned for more happiness and how that relates to taking your career to the next level or getting on the right career path?
